SUNSET / PARKSIDE, San Francisco — The L Taraval Improvement Project is complete, according to SFMTA, following two main construction phases designed to improve rail service and pedestrian safety along the Parkside and Sunset corridor.
The project rebuilt sections of track and utility systems, added or expanded boarding islands, replaced older overhead equipment and improved traffic signals, crossings, curb ramps and road pavement. Work from the zoo to Sunset Boulevard was completed in 2021, followed by the Sunset Boulevard-to-West Portal section in 2024. SFMTA lists the total project at about $90 million and says the effort stayed on schedule and budget.
The agency identifies the corridor as a former high-injury area where people were struck crossing streets or boarding trains. New boarding areas and turn restrictions can change familiar movements for drivers as well as passengers, so regular users should review current road markings.
What local residents should know
People using the L can consult live Muni service alerts for any ongoing interruptions; the main capital project’s completion does not mean transit never experiences later maintenance or service changes.
