SUNSET / PARKSIDE, San Francisco — Sunset Dunes has transformed a former Great Highway traffic corridor into an oceanfront public recreation space on the western edge of San Francisco.
San Francisco Recreation and Parks says the two-mile, approximately 50-acre park between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard officially opened April 12, 2025. The department lists park hours from 5 a.m. to midnight and describes access for people walking, cycling and using other forms of nonmotorized recreation. Amenities include public art, restrooms and a skate area.
The park’s roadway origins mean its pedestrian and cyclist areas differ from a conventional landscaped neighborhood park. Visitors should travel at safe speeds, watch for families and obey posted restrictions near dunes and protected habitat. Pacific Ocean surf remains hazardous, and the park’s presence does not create a lifeguarded swimming beach.
What local residents should know
For the latest facility closures, event permits, restroom access and maintenance reports, consult the city’s official Sunset Dunes page. Residents using vehicles to reach the coast should look for legal nearby parking rather than driving onto closed park space.
